The Islands of Tuscany

Jan-3-2012 By admin

The Tuscan archipelago includes six islands, also called the “pearls of the Thyrrenian sea” for their sheer beauty, wild character, splendid vegetation and rich marine wildlife. Altogether they constitute a marine reservation, which is strenuously protected by the Tuscan region and Italian government.

Their names are Elba, Giglio, Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa and Montecristo. The latter sounds familiar? Yes, sure, as in The Count of Montecristo by Dumas. The island was indeed used as a prison in the past centuries. However, it was not the only one of this group of islands. Islands work as the perfect natural remedy against evasions. Elba island shortly was the famous golden prison of Napoleon, Pianosa has been a penitentiary until 1998 for 140 years, while Gorgona is still home to one of the most efficient penal colonies employing inmates in the production of organic farming, typical Tuscan crafts, and honey. Their employment as prison territory for so many years contributed to maintaining their natural aspect almost intact, preserving them from mass tourism and real estate exploitation. When you visit them today you can still enjoy all their wild character and rapturing beauty.

The Mediterranean sea wetting the coast of these Tuscan islands offers sea bottoms in perfect conditions, a true paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. Although fish hunting is forbidden, your eyes can catch all the splendid colors that the indigenous sea flora and fauna have on display. Many come from all over Europe to enjoy a diving, as these islands preserve an immense diversity and a safe haven for fish. The islands of Pianosa and Montecristo are so protected that you will need a special written permit to visit it, and will not be able to near it with a motor engine.

The presence of modern life is well evident on Elba and Giglio, the largest and most developed islands. Here is the nightlife with summer jet set, museums and road networks, although at Giglio you are forbidden any motorized means of transportation. During the summer the population of these two islands increases manifolds, while the winter is more suitable to quiet and tourism is almost absent. Pianosa, Capraia, Montecristo, and Gorgona is where you should go if you want to feel in close contact with nature and relax deeply. Gorgona offers a handful of houses, no hotels and just one pizza restaurant. Capraia gives you more than this, but do not expect any movida. Pianosa is as protected as Montecristo and sojourning is not possible. Moreover, scuba diving is forbidden. These are places to spend a truly unique holiday in Tuscany. If you are lucky you can find one of the rare villas on the Tuscany coast to rent instead of a hotel, and spend an unforgettable vacation on an island that will feel “yours” for a few days.

Hiking lovers just need to go to Capraia. Here is the most elevated point of the archipelago, and the entire territory is quite bare. Only low rising Mediterranean bushes grow on the island. Trails marked by the Alpine club gift hikers with kilometers to explore. The reward are the mesmerizing views to be enjoyed from the island’s elevations. From here one dominates 360-degree views over the shimmering sea.

Finally, the former prison-island of Pianosa is an interesting place to visit. You are given the chance to see the former life of this penal colony renting a bike and running around the places where for more than a century inmates from all over Italy have conducted their existence. The visit is also part of a one-day mini cruise of the Tuscan archipelago, a great occasion to discover the island you like best and to return to for a dedicated summer vacation.

This is a guest post written by Matt. Matt writes for ThriftyTuscany.com, where you can find a great variety of villas Tuscany coast and Tuscan villas by owner.

Despite their Spanish nationality, Canary Islands really have quite a distinct culture of their own. Not least amongst the chief points of difference is the cuisine to be found on the islands, whilst the Spanish spoken in the archipelago has its own vocabulary and regional dialect as well.

Many visitors to Lanzarote, for instance, are often surprised by the range of products available in local supermarkets. And those staying in self-catering holiday villas in Lanzarote have plenty of opportunity to try things they won´t find at home.

Amongst the most obvious differences is the range of fish, with everything from fresh sea bream and anchovies to little known species such as wreck fish and parrot fish. With much of the fruit and vegetables also grown locally, visitors can sample plantain, sweet potato, papaya and guayabo.

Some of the more tropical fruits grown on Lanzarote and Gran Canaria were brought to the islands from the Caribbean, as the trade between these two areas goes back a good four hundred years or so. The islands are also home to their very own species of black pig, which  predates the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.

When times were hard, as was the case after the volcanic eruptions of 1730, many locals survived on staples such as gofio, which is a flour made from finely milled maize. Gofio can still be found in many traditional desserts served at local restaurants on the island.

Locally produced goats cheeses are also extremely popular, both with visitors and residents alike. The more mature cheeses have a tangy flavour and chalky, crumbly texture that makes them an ideal complement to a salad or with a glass of Lanzarote wine.

With numerous bodegas dotted across the wine region of Lanzarote, wine is also an important gastronomic offering. Several vineyards have won awards in the last few years for their red, rosé and white wines, which are produced by unique methods of cultivation and are still harvested by hand.

This brief foray into the food and drink found on Lanzarote illustrates how much there is to discover by visitors to the island with a keen interest in gastronomy. Guests staying in Playa Blanca villas or other areas on the island should find plenty to amuse their palates if they are prepared to try some of the local produce.

To get a better idea of where to stay on Lanzarote, you can browse a wide selection of accommodation at www.holidayvillasinlanzarote.co.uk, all of which have been designed with the self-catering tourist in mind.

New York City is known as the city that never sleeps. As a tourist this will benefit you because it means that you can really make the most of your time in the Big Apple, seeing many of the greatest tourist attractions that it has to offer. While there are some very commonly visited sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Times Square, there may be things that are overlooked. If you want to see another side of New York City, there is plenty to see and do!

A great thing to do when in New York City is to take a walk around the West Village. The West Village features all of the old brown stones that the city is known for and will just give you some insight into what New York City is really all about. There are some great things to see in this area of New York City including the Jefferson Market Courthouse, the Magnolia Bakery, and of course the Spotted Pig.

If you love film you should definitely take in the Film Forum. Here you can see the movies that you read about in the New York Times that you cannot see anywhere else. Indie documentaries and foreign art cinema is what this place is all about and will really be something that you will remember if you are a true film lover.

If you love a good pizza you cannot miss Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. Here you will be able to consume what is considered some of the best pizza in the country, let alone New York City, which is known for its wide variety of tasty food options. If you love pizza, you absolutely need to make time to visit this pizzeria!

There are many places to vacation in the world, but one that cannot be overlooked is Disneyland. This is a vacation paradise not just for those who have children or for families, but for the old and young alike. You never outgrow Disneyland because there is so much to see and do. For those who are older, Disneyland will bring out the child in them again. For children, Disneyland truly is a place where magic is alive and they can meat their favorite Disney characters.

When planning for your visit to Disneyland you should allow for at least three days to visit all that the parks have to offer. Many make the mistake of thinking that they can see everything in the parks in one day, but this simply is not the case. There is so much to see and do that you could probably spend more than a week in the area and not see everything. There are numerous parks that are spread out across a large space.

The best thing you can do for your Disneyland vacation is research before you go. Narrow down what things you would like to see the very most so you can at least take in those things. If you have time after you visit those things, you can then make some detours and see some extra things. There is just so much to see and do in the area that if you don’t make a plan you may lose out on seeing the things that you want to see most.

Choosing nearby lodging options will also allow for you to make the most of your time at Disneyland. The reason is that when you are in the parks you will get very tired. Being close by will allow you to make stops at your hotel for a quick nap so you have the energy to get back out there and see what all the park has to offer! There are many lodging options near the parks, including the Disney Resort that will offer first class service.

LAS VEGAS – ON A BUDGET

Jul-24-2011 By vinay

Las Vegas is a place for the rich and the famous, for those who can gamble away a lot of money and stay in spectacular hotels and watch exclusive shows.

Wrong.

Las Vegas offers some of the best bargain holidays, and if you do a little bit of research you can have a really amazing holiday and an unforgettable experience.

Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps. The casinos have no clocks, the buffets are never-ending and the neon lights never seem to go off. Everywhere you look everything seems to be built on mind-boggling scale. The hotels are dazzling, each one built more extravagantly than the next.

So how can we have a budget holiday here?

Look for hotels that offer you package deals for a few nights. Most of them have great buffet meals which are fairly reasonably priced, unless you are planning to eat at the Bellagio, which boasts of a gourmet buffet.

See the best shows at half price, by seeking the tickets for the afternoons, or at the half price stalls located on the Strip. The performers are usually top-rated and the shows are magnificent.

Hotels like Treasure Island and Bellagio have free shows for the general public which can be watched from the roadside. The Bellagio fountains are world famous and at various times in the evening special shows are organised.

At the casinos avoid the table games and just play at the slot machines. If you do not wish to risk too much money, play at the machines which take less money.

Have fun, and do not stress yourself if you lose a little bit of money.

DISNEYLAND, Anaheim, California

Jun-24-2011 By vinay

Disneyland is one of those magical places, where children watch their dreams being transformed into reality and adults are transported into a world where the child is supreme, and where no one ever seems to grow up.

The Disney resorts can be found in varied places such as Orlando, Florida, Hong Kong, Paris and Tokyo, but as the original fantasyland, there are few that can match the splendour of Disneyland in California.

The resort is divided into various theme parks and also has shopping and entertainment sections. You can choose between themes such as Fantasyland and Mickey’s Toontown, or be really adventurous and go to all of them. But do remember that even though everything can be accessed by foot, you need a few days to see all of it.

Once you are inside the resort, everything is easily available. There are great places to eat and shop, some amazing rides (be prepared to stand in line) and also fabulous entertainment shows. You can purchase a ticket which permits entry to all shows and rides or buy them individually.

There are some really great restaurants inside, but some of upscale ones require a reservation, sometimes weeks in advance.

Check out the specials that may be a part of the entertainment of the day. There may be parades during the day, or fireworks in the evening.

If you are a parent accompanying your children, be prepared to spend hours with their favourite cartoon characters. Return to your childhood and join them as they relish meeting their storybook heroes, or as they squeal on the rides. After all, this is their Fantasyland.
